In many cultures, it is popular for people to do interesting things to their bodies to make them more beautiful, sensual, or for a traditional/religious purpose. Some of these “modifications” can be extremely painful at first, though some are tamer. There are people who elongate their necks with metal rings, put wooden bowls in their mouths to make their lips huge, and other interesting things. I think these painful modifications are a form of art, the art of pain. One of the things many Americans do is get tatoos. As you can see from my picture, I have several.
