I was cleaning out my desk of all my old papers when I stumbled across a paper I had written for my high school history class. Now, normally I wouldn’t have given this a second thought, but the subject of this particular paper was of interest to me. The class was actually pretty good, it was not just memorizing dates and times, but about why history happened and what it meant for us today.
The title of the paper was “Footbinding: a Contemporary View on a Traditional Practice.” Now the entire class had been forced to write a paper taking a historical (although sometimes still current) practice or ritual and write about it by applying today’s standards/beliefs/morals on it. We had done a chapter on China that had mentioned footbinding, and since even at 16 I was the same dirty lil girl I am now (totally into foot and body worship), I choose that to write about.
In Freud’s opinion, footbinding was one of the first forms of foot fetish. They’d take women’s feet and shape them from childhood to be small and delicate.
